Dr. Ken Arnold, OMA President 2008 - 2009

Dr. Ken Arnold is the Ontario Medical Association’s 127th president. Dr. Arnold, a General Practitioner in Thunder Bay, completed his degree in medicine in 1971 at Queen’s University in Belfast, UK.

After practicing as a Senior House Officer at Belfast City Hospital and at The Ulster Hospital in Dundonald, he moved to Thunder Bay in 1974 where he currently lives with his wife Melinda. His practice serves 2000 varied patients at the Port Arthur Health Centre. The Family Health Group (FHG) works within a large multi-specialty group which allows him to have first-hand knowledge of the issues that these various specialists encounter. The Centre provides services such as independent X-Rays, ultra-sounds, access to a dietician, massage therapist and chiropodist and has a pharmacy on site. This setting has allowed him to view the benefits of an integrated health care practice.

Throughout his years in practice, Dr. Arnold has been a strong voice for the medical community and patients. In 1996, he served as President for the Thunder Bay Medical Society and has also served as the Governor of the Ontario Medical Foundation since 2005.

His long-time involvement in these endeavours, as well as a wide variety of committee work within the OMA, contributes to his knowledge and understanding of the health care system and the needs of patients and physicians in Ontario. He is focused on improving patient care in the province, especially in rural and remote regions of Ontario.

Dr. Arnold has established numerous objectives for his tenure as President of the OMA including:

  1. Getting every Ontarian timely access to a doctor.

  2. Developing solutions to raise a generation of healthier kids.

  3. Raising awareness of the challenges facing aboriginal and remote communities.
