The 2007 Student Lobby Day was held at Queen’s Park on Sunday, April 22nd, and Monday, April 23rd, in Toronto.

Sunday’s events included educational sessions on leadership, advocacy, media and lobbying techniques. There was also a briefing on the issue of deferring interest accrual and payments until completion of residency. More than 40 medical students from across Ontario, and 15 residents from the Professional Association of Internes and Residents of Ontario attended the event.

Monday’s events included meeting with Members of Provincial Parliament, observing question period and networking with government officials. Special guest speakers for the day included the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Hon. George Smitherman, Deputy Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, Mrs. Elizabeth Witmer, New Democratic Party leader Howard Hampton, political analyst Greg Lyle, and Queen’s Park reporter Rob Ferguson.

Lobby Day is an opportunity to increase awareness of legislative issues affecting medicine, to foster relationships with MPPs and to gain real-life experience in the practical aspects of health care advocacy.
