Toronto, ON, Jan. 8, 2015 – The Ontario Medical Association congratulates its members on their recent appointments to the Order of Canada.
“On behalf of all of the members of the OMA I would like to offer my congratulations to these outstanding physicians,” said Dr. Ved Tandan, OMA President. “It is wonderful to see these innovators be recognized for their hard work and dedication to patients.”
Dr. Wendy Levinson of Toronto was named as an Officer in recognition for her contributions to promoting effective communication between physicians and patients, as well as for her sustained leadership in academic medicine. Dr. Levinson heads the Choosing Wisely Canada campaign to improve the appropriate use of medical procedures and tests in Canada.
Also named an Officer was Dr. Shaf Keshavjee, surgeon-in-chief at the University Health Network in Toronto, and director of the Toronto Lung Transplant Program. He was acknowledged for his innovative contributions to thoracic surgery, notably in the development of a process to improve lung transplantation.
Dr. Norman Marcon, the director of the therapeutic endoscopy training program at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, was also named an Officer for his contributions to the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases and for his work to disseminate the latest advances in therapeutic endoscopy.

These appointments were part of 95 new appointments announced by Governor General David Johnston on Dec. 26. The Order of Canada, one of our country’s highest civilian honours, was established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. Over the last 45 years, more than 6,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.
