Toronto, January 30, 2019 - The OMA is pleased to welcome the Ontario government’s important announcement for infrastructure to support mental health and addictions services. Today’s announcement of investments up to $633 million for the construction of two new facilities at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), will help provide important emergency mental health care, specialized clinics and 125 new inpatient beds.
“Appropriately treating mental health and addictions has incredible downstream effects that can profoundly change not only a person’s life, but a community’s future — impacting your local hospital and your doctor’s office, as well as local businesses, schools, and even the justice system,” said Dr. Nadia Alam, OMA President.
The Ontario Medical Association (OMA) is pleased to see this investment into mental health and addictions services. The OMA has highlighted the importance of investing in these services as part of our 2019 pre-budget submission. Within this context, Ontario’s doctors are calling on the government of Ontario to continue to prioritize health care, specifically for increased integration of mental health and addictions care across care settings and between Ministries/agencies, and for a provincial suicide prevention strategy that is embedded throughout our health and social systems.
The OMA looks forward to collaborating and finding further solutions to address this issue with the government.
