The Ontario Public Sector Employees Union and Unifor recently insulted / published materials insulting the medical profession. Their statements escalated from comments in local papers, to bumper stickers and billboards, to comments in national media and a press conference. Calls to OPSEU to discuss this matter went unanswered.

Staying silent on this matter is wrong. We all know how healthcare suffered under the previous government’s cuts. With a new government, we have a chance to make things right and with it, a big job ahead of us.

The best kind of health care teams are built on trust and mutual respect and shaming and blaming one member of the team destroys that trust and respect. Good patient care — like the kind I saw last night from working with my OR team or what colleagues see in the Emergency Department, physician clinics and hospital wards — needs teamwork between doctors, nurses, PT/ OTs, pharmacists, clerks and housekeeping staff.

Everybody counts. Everybody matters. It’s long past time to put away divisive politics and work together to care for patients.
