OMF virtual gala
The first OMF Virtual Gala held on Sept. 25, 2020, hosted more than 200 participants across the province and raised funds for medical student bursaries and Ontario physicians in times of financial need.
Highlights from the evening
Comedian Julie Kim emceed the lively event, which featured messages from OMA and OMF leaders Dr. David Esser, Allan O’Dette, Dr. Samantha Hill and Dr. Audrey Karlinsky. We heard a short message from Canadian comedian Russell Peters and Voices Rock Medicine performed an exclusive premiere of the song Brave by Sarah Bareilles. We heard engaging talks from former Olympian Mark Tewksbury, and Canadian fitness experts Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod.
Dan Julien and his band performed the songs Castle on The Hill by Ed Sheeran and Nothing Is Holdin’ Me Back by Shawn Mendes. Sean Stanley and Kyle Tarder-Stoll performed the songs What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong and Ain’t That Love by Ray Charles. The evening ended with Voices Rock Medicine performing the song Rise Again.
The OMF hosted an online silent auction during the gala and ran its first-ever 50/50 draw. Best of all, guests had a chance to enter an early bird contest and best picture contest wearing their best party outfits and coziest pyjamas.
What participants said
“Thanks to everyone for all the hard work — the evening was amazing! Mark’s address was so profound. I will have to keep thinking about it and how wonderful of him to share his journey. Kim was fun as an emcee and seeing childhood stars from Body Break was so fun — yet so bittersweet! Touching to hear from the medical students too. I was a bursary recipient back at McGill and still carry gratitude for that. The gala musical entertainment was so soothing — and that darn Rise Again song still makes me cry! It seemed a perfect end to the gala. I can’t begin to imagine the logistics in planning something like this — so again — thank you!”
