Ontario Medical Student Bursary Fund

An enduring initiative of the OMF, the Ontario Medical Student Bursary Fund was established in 1999 in response to rising tuition fees and the mounting debt Ontario medical students experienced. Funds are provided to students in financial need through the distribution of two types of bursaries: general bursaries and named bursaries.

General bursaries

All students enrolled in an Ontario medical school are eligible for an OMF general bursary of $3,000. Every year the financial aid office at each medical school nominates students who are in the greatest financial need. The total number of bursaries distributed to each university is determined by each school’s first-year enrolment numbers.

Students do not apply for these general bursaries.

Named bursaries

An individual or group establishes these $2,000 bursaries to commemorate a physician’s achievements, in memory of a colleague or relative, to support students pursuing a specific specialty, or to support students from a certain area of the province.

OMF elective bursaries

Elective bursaries are offered to medical students to allow a broad range of clinical experience through their elective programs.

Are you travelling for an elective this year?

The Ontario Medical Foundation offers two $500 bursaries per year to students at each of the six Ontario medical schools.

These bursaries are specifically allocated to assist students enrolled in an elective program. Recipients are chosen based on factors including academic validity of the learning experience, location, adequate academic achievement and need for assistance.
