Dr. Ignatius Scime

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Dr. Ignatius (Harry) Scime, 93, of Hamilton passed away peacefully September 7, 2024, at St. Peter's at Chedoke with family members by his side.

Harry was born December 18, 1930, in Buffalo, NY. His family moved to Hamilton, where he started selling newspapers at age 9. He graduated from Cathedral High then attended Medical School at Ottawa University where he graduated in 1956, as a Gold Medalist, the highest aggregate standing in medicine. He then moved on to complete his internship at Mt. Carmel Hospital, Detroit, MI, where he met his beloved wife, Toni. They wed in May of 1958, and he completed his Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, MI.

In 1961, Dr. Scime and his bride moved back to Hamilton, where he started his Internal Medicine/Gastroenterology private practice, served as an active staff member at St. Joseph's Hospital as well as a member of the Hamilton Academy of Medicine, Ontario Medical Associates, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.

In April of 1962, Dr. Scime joined the McGregor clinic and continued his significant involvement in the medical community by teaching at McMaster University and St Joseph's Department of Medicine where he was appointed Chairman of the Education Committee (1967/68) which led to his designation as President of Medical Staff at St. Joseph's Hospital in 1974, Head of Endoscopy Unit and Chief of Medicine at McGregor Clinic in 1975. He also continued to serve on the peer review committee for the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons up until retirement in 2001.

Dr. Ignatius Scime was a very well-respected Gastroenterologist in Hamilton serving the community at St. Joseph's Hospital for over 40 years (1961 -2001). Known to his colleagues, residents, nurses, and patients as a compassionate, caring, dedicated physician.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Toni, his devoted son, Anthony, and his dear daughter, Dr. Lori Scime, (David A Christian, IV), granddaughter, Rebecca Felts (Luke), and great-granddaughter, Valerie Felts.

Harry was an avid golfer, racquetball player, and had a passion for life that will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

The family would like to especially thank St. Peter's at Chedoke staff for their loving, excellent care of Dr. Harry over the past few years. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that charitable donations be directed to St. Peter's at Chedoke or St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation.
