It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. David Howard Smith, a beloved son, brother, nephew, cousin, esteemed physician, and dear friend, who passed away suddenly at the age of 59.
Dr. Smith was a dedicated anesthesiologist and associate professor at the University of Western Ontario, where he mentored generations of students with warmth, patience and a deep passion for medicine. His commitment to excellence and compassionate care earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and patients alike.
Beyond the operating room and lecture hall, David was a man of quiet generosity and global compassion. He volunteered countless hours to provide pro bono anesthesia services in developing countries, bringing his medical care to those in great need and exemplifying the highest ideals of his profession.
David’s life was rich with love and meaningful connections. He is survived by his devoted and heartbroken mother Irene, his sister and brother-in-law Rena and Bill, and a close-knit extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins who adored him. He held family close to his heart, and his presence brought warmth, wisdom, and laughter to all who loved him.
David was a man of many interests. He travelled extensively and loved to explore new experiences. Among his many eclectic accomplishments, he had a state-of-the-art knowledge of electronics and computer technology. He was also an amateur pilot.
David's legacy is one of compassion, service and integrity. He will be remembered not only for his extraordinary contributions to medicine, but for the warmth he shared with family, friends and colleagues. He will be profoundly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Magen David Adom. May his memory be a blessing.
