In memoriam
March 6, 2025

Dr. Joseph Derek Eden

Passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on March 6, 2025, in his 92nd year.

Born in Tyldesley, Lancashire, England, Joe was the beloved husband of Pat for 65 years. She predeceased him in October 2021, and he missed her very much. Loving father of David (Mary Frances) and Bronwen (Tony). Proud grandpa of Michele, Emily (Billy), Kathryn (Fidel), Mary-Lynn, Michael, and Olivia. Predeceased by his sister Doris Dewhurst.

When he was in elementary school, he was offered a scholarship to attend Bolton School, which he attended for eight years. He always commended them for the education that they provided, which prepared him well for medical school at Durham University.

He met Pat in 1954 at a dance, when he was a medical student and she was a nurse. They married in 1956, moved to Canada with David and Bronwen in 1965, and settled in Niagara-on-the-Lake, where he practised as a family doctor for 30 years.

In his last decade of work, he was one of the founders of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Community Palliative Care Service. He was one of the first doctors in Niagara to provide his patients with an infusion pump for pain management.

Joe was a longtime member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. He provided many parishioners with pastoral care over the years. He also was a member of the Order of St. Luke, who provided healing prayers to those in need.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Niagara-on-the-Lake Community Palliative Care Service or the YWCA Niagara Region.

The family would like to thank the staff of Higher Standards Home Service, the Palliative Care Team of Home Care Support Services, and Dr. Hutchinson for the compassionate and loving care they provided.
