‘I felt so understood’: Physicians open up about connecting with PHP

In a new video series, physicians share how support from the Physician Health Program helped them navigate personal and professional struggles

“I can’t even describe how powerful that [first] conversation was,” Dr. Usha Parthasarathi says.

Dr. Parthasarathi is just one of several physicians opening up in a new video series about their experience accessing the OMA’s confidential support service for physicians, with a goal of building awareness among all physicians of the services available to them, lifting the stigma on seeking help and supporting physician wellness amid rising burnout. If you’re experiencing something affecting you personally and professionally, the Physician Health Program is here to support you.

In her video, Dr. Parthasarathi, a psychiatrist in Burlington, Ont., says she “felt so understood” when she reached out to the PHP for support with stress she was experiencing in her workplace. The program serves the needs of physicians who are at risk of or currently experiencing burnout, stress, mental health concerns, challenges with substance use and more. You’ll be connected to prompt support and, if needed, connections to treatment or support with accountability and advocacy.

“I had an appointment within 48 hours, which was amazing. And it was what I needed at the time,” says Dr. Jessica Hopkins, chief health protection and emergency preparedness officer at Public Health Ontario, in her video.

Dr. Hopkins sought the support of PHP after a traumatic event in 2024.

“You don’t have to suffer on your own, and there’s really effective help that is available through the PHP,” she says.

“They advocated for me. They vouched for my recovery,” says Dr. George Photopoulos, a family physician in Toronto, regarding his experience with the Physician Health Program.

“If it wasn’t for the Physician Health Program, I would be dead,” says Dr. Craig Mitchell, a family physician in Kingston, Ont. Dr. Mitchell, who accessed the PHP as a learner, credits the program with saving his life.

The PHP provides a range of services to physicians, residents and medical students across Ontario, such as timely connection to treatment and resources like counselling, coaching and more with a network of professionals who understand the physician experience. The program also offers support services to family members or for anyone concerned about a loved one or colleague, as well as educational resources and support for physician leaders. Workshops, groups, training, education and more can also be accessed on topics related to physician health and burnout.

It can be hard to ask for help, but it’s worth it, says Dr. Nel Wieman, chief medical officer at the First Nations Health Authority, about her experience accessing the program.

“The mutual support you get and what you learn from other physicians who have walked through that fire and have come out the other side is lifesaving,” she says.
