Dr. Eugene Andrew Varga

Pediatric allergist

Dr. Eugene Andrew Varga died peacefully at Extendicare Tecumseh after a few years of declining health.

Loving husband of Margaret (nee White) for 62 years; much-loved father of Jennifer (Bryan), Tom (Sarah) and Geoff (Candy); son of the late Martin and Elizabeth Varga; and predeceased by half-brothers Jim, John and Franklin; loving grandpa of Tyler, Travis (2009), Finlay, Logan, Cameron and Connor; step-grandfather of Bryan Jr., Ashley and Hudson Crots; loving great-grandfather of Jaden, Olivia and Jackson and Emma Cooper; survived by several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law of Catherine Tait (Alex, deceased) and Tom White (Marilyn, deceased).

Gene was born in Toronto, but spent most of his growing-up years on a farm in the Barrie, Ont., area. He attended Queen's University in Kingston, Ont., and graduated in medicine in 1961. After one year of pediatric residency at the Kingston General Hospital, he and Marg moved to Fort William, Ont., (Thunder Bay) and was in general practice there and then moved to Tavistock, Ont., to do general practice until June of 1967. Gene regretted not finishing his pediatric specialty, so he spent four years at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, completing his fellowship and then one extra year of allergy and immunology. Gene and Marg moved to Windsor, Ont., in 1971 and Gene practised pediatric allergy with the Windsor Allergy Associates until his retirement. Gene was past board member of the Children's Rehab Centre, Ontario Thoracic Society and was the practising physician for cystic fibrosis patients for a number of years.

Gene was an avid reader and enjoyed the solace of reading, riding his tractor and tilling his garden. He belonged to a men's cooking class for many years and loved to cook. He was a member of the Windsor Curling Club and then the Senior Curling league at Roseland. He was an Elder at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church until it closed. Gene did mission outreach in Haiti for seven years with a group organized by ACWAM (Active Christians With A Mission) and led a medical team where they held clinics in remote areas and orphanages. He and Marg enjoyed travelling with friends and family to many countries.

The family would like to thank the staff at Tecumseh Extendicare for their care and compassion. As per Gene's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service to take place at a later date.
