Dr. Maxwell Charles Patterson

Dr. Maxwell Charles Patterson, known affectionately as Max to his friends and loved ones, embarked on his final journey on Feb. 13, 2026.

Born on Sept. 13, 1930, in the scenic town of Sunny Bank, Gaspe, Que., Max was a beacon of inspiration whose radiant personality and zest for life touched everyone he met. He peacefully concluded his remarkable story in Tansley Woods, Burlington, Ont., surrounded by the love of his family.

Max's life was a testament to the power of love, commitment and curiosity. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 71 years, Rheta Carolyn, having celebrated countless cherished moments together. Their bond was a guiding light of dedication and joy. Max was the proud patriarch of a vibrant family, including his children, Andrew (Jen), Robert (Diana), Donna Wiese (Hector) and Sandra (Anthea); and cherished grandchildren, Violet, Tyler (Mary), Matthew (Kat), Evan (Alyssa), Colin, Jordan and Stephen. His legacy of love continued with his great-granddaughter Amelia, a newer blossom in the family tree. He is also survived by his brother, Nelson Patterson (Marilyn); and many nieces and nephews.

Max's intellectual pursuits were as expansive as his heart. He completed his education at Mount Allison, followed by an illustrious medical career after earning his MD CM from McGill University in 1955 and FRCP(C) at the University of Toronto. His service as a medical officer in the navy in Dartmouth, N.S., laid the foundation for a life of leadership and excellence. As both a clinical pathologist at the Henderson General Hospital in Hamilton and later the director of lab medicine, chief of medical staff and vice-president of medical affairs at St. Joseph's Hospital in Toronto, Max's contributions to the medical field were profound and lasting.

Max's passion for life was reflected in his diverse interests. With a curling broom in hand, he glided across the ice with precision and camaraderie, representing the Burlington Golf and Country Club at the Canadian Senior Championships three times over his 50-year membership. He enjoyed many years of golf and friendships at Beverley Golf and Country Club. His love for bicycling took him on ventures as grand as traversing Canada from Victoria, B.C., to St. John's, N.L., with Carolyn and Sandra, cycling the Alaska Highway and exploring many international destinations. Adventurous and undaunted, Max celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with Carolyn by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, a testament to the heights one can reach when driven by love and determination. Max's connection with nature was profound. Whether fishing in tranquil waters, hiking scenic trails or caring for the Bruce Trail, he found solace and strength in the natural world.

An avid reader, he possessed an insatiable thirst for knowledge, a reflection of his intelligent and thoughtful nature. In a world that often emphasizes the destination, Max reminded us to revel in the journey. He lived a life that was both a map and a compass for those who knew him, highlighting paths of courage, compassion and the ceaseless pursuit of knowledge and adventure.

Max Patterson's story is one of a life not merely lived but embraced with both hands, a heart full and eyes always looking toward the next summit. Let us honour his legacy by daring to live as he did-with love, thoughtfulness and an intelligence that lights the way for others.
