
Dr. Dennis Frederick Pitt died on February 18, 2026 at age 78. He is survived by Susan, his wonderful wife of 48 years, 4 daughters, 5 grandchildren and his sister, Lorna Doubt.
Born in Kingston, he graduated from Queen’s University medical school in 1972. He was the president and reunion coordinator for his medical school class. He did his surgical training at Western University in London and acquired a Master of Medical Education from the University of Dundee.
He practiced general surgery for forty-five years, forty-four in Ottawa at The Riverside and The Ottawa Hospitals. He was an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa, a Life Member of the Ontario Medical Association and an Honorary Member of the Canadian Medical Association. The Dr. Dennis F. Pitt Educational Scholarship is awarded annually to The Ottawa Hospital critical care nurses.
Dennis is the author of Those Were the Days: An Anecdotal History of the Academy of Medicine Ottawa (2004) and has authored and co-authored numerous journal articles on medicine. A Journey in Surgery: The Memoir of a Canadian Surgeon (2026) is his second book and captures his life’s journey in his own words, available at www.dennispitt.ca.
He said, “At age 17 years, I chose surgery as my profession, and it served me as well as I served it.”
